01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Open the delivery parcel and you find not disposable containers, but a heavy genuine kama pot set upon a wooden tray, complete with condiments, pickles, and an insulated flask filled with hot dashi broth. Operating for delivery and takeaway in the Asakusa and Senzoku areas, Kamatora turns a routine home dining table into a proper multi-piece meal set from a specialty shop.

When the wooden lid of the classic Gomoku Kamameshi is lifted, fragrant steam carrying notes of soy sauce and broth drifts upward. The rice is layered with prawns, quail eggs, chicken, shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, ginkgo nuts, and shredded egg crepe, cooked so each grain holds its shape while soaking in dashi flavour. Turning the bottom with a rice paddle reveals golden okoge, the crisped layer of toasted rice that lends an aromatic crunch to the entire pot. Diners seeking straightforward meaty flavour can choose the Tori Kamameshi, loaded with tender, juicy chicken pieces accented by fragrant sansho pepper.

The real appeal of this kamameshi lies in working through the generous portion—yielding roughly 3 light bowls—in the style of hitsumabushi. The first bowl is savoured plain, highlighting the interplay of toppings and toasted rice. For the second, adding shredded nori seaweed, chopped spring onions, and wasabi brings a brisk change of pace. To finish the third bowl, pouring the steaming dashi from the thermos transforms the rice into dashi-chazuke, where the deeply savory broth softens the toasted rice for an easy-drinking finale that stays engaging to the last spoonful.

The service operates across lunch and dinner shifts, making it handy for work-from-home lunches or quiet dinners indoors. Once finished, packing the pot and flask into the collection bag and setting it outside the door allows Kamatora to retrieve them later, leaving behind zero dishwashing while delivering a thorough Japanese meal at home.
